The city of San Andres Tuxtla is the head of the municipality of the same name, in the southern part of the Mexican state of Veracruz, in the region known as Los Tuxtlas. It is located in the southern part of the State in the Sierra de San Martín, at coordinates 18°27 "north latitude and 95°13" west longitude, at a height of 420 meters above sea level. It limits to the north with the Gulf of Mexico. To the east with Catemaco. To the south with Hueyapan de Ocampo. To the west with Santiago Tuxtla and Ángel R. Cabada. Its approximate distance to the southeast of the state capital by road is 275 km by road.
For years it was an important agricultural center for tobacco production, currently its activities are focused more on trade and the provision of services such as tourism, as well as the activity of social policy to be the headquarters of multiple agencies.
