Coatzintla is a municipality located in the Mexican state of Veracruz, in the region of Totonacapan, east of the Mexican republic. It limits the north with the municipalities of Tihuatlán and Poza Rica, to the east with the municipality of Papantla, to the west with the state of Puebla and to the southwest with the municipality of Coyutla. Its approximate distance by road to the capital of the state, is 120 km. The name of the municipality comes from the Nahuatl coatl culebra, diminutive reverential Tzin, Tlan place,"Place of the small snake".
According to the INEGI 2005 Population and Housing Count, the total population of the municipality is 43,106 inhabitants, the municipal capital is conurbated with the urban sprawl of the city of Poza Rica de Hidalgo.
