For the municipal seat see: Macuspana. The Municipality of Macuspana is a municipality of the Mexican state of Tabasco, located in the region of the Usumacinta River and in the subregion marshes. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word Macui-chapana, which means "Place of the five sweepings or cleanings". Its municipal seat is the city of Macuspana, a city located on the banks of the Puxcatán River, the municipality has a division constituted, in addition, by 2 villas, 20 ejidos, 129 rancherías, 15 towns, 12 urban colonies and 1 new population center, as well as many subdivisions.

The population of the municipality is currently 271 716 inhabitants, which represents 6.9% of the total population of the state, having a population density of 63 inhabitants per km2.
