It is a municipality of the Mexican state of Tabasco, located in the region of the Usumacinta River and in the sub region of Los Ríos. Its municipal seat is the city of Balancán de Domínguez and a station constituted, in addition, by 48 ejidos, 38 rancherías, 6 towns, 3 rural colonies and 2 villas. Its extension is of 3 626.10 km², which correspond to 14.81% of the total of the state. This places the municipality in the second place in territorial extension.
It is bordered to the north by the state of Campeche, to the east it borders the state of Campeche and to the south it borders Guatemala with the municipality of San Andres, to the south by the municipalities of Tenosique and Emiliano Zapata and to the west by the municipalities of Emiliano Zapata, Candelaria, Carmen in the state of Campeche.
