Tehuantepec is a city in southeastern Mexico, in the state of Oaxaca, in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec whose official name is Santo Domingo Tehuantepec, and is the capital of the municipality of the same name. Located at the margins of the Tehuantepec River, the city is 100 meters above sea level, in a very warm zone, with little thermal oscillation throughout the year, 19°C as minimum in the month of January and 37°C as maximum in the warmest month The river has been and continues to be the engine of agriculture, through irrigation channels. The agricultural products are focused on sesame, coconut, banana and mango. There is also cattle and sheep farming.
Handicrafts are also important tradition, especially pottery and tehuana dresses. Santo Domingo Tehuantepec, Salina Cruz and San Blas Atempa belong to the metropolitan area of Tehuantepec with a total of 161,337 inhabitants, occupying the 52nd position nationwide.
