Santa María Jalapa del Marqués, also known as Jalapa del Marqués, is a town located on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. It is located in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in the southeast of the state, at coordinates 95º27 'west longitude 16º26' north latitude, at an altitude of 160 meters above sea level. It has a chain of mountains, although very little high that make its entrance from the north and leave from the south, called Vixañatul. There is another small hill called "El Mar del Marqués" along with "El Cerro del Tizate". It has a population of approximately 13,000 inhabitants. The predominant climate is the warm one.
Like its neighboring towns Jalapa del Marqués has several fiestas per year, which correspond to different saints that are venerated in the town, among the most representative we can find San Sebastian de las Flores, Santa Cruz, and the Assumption of Mary. In this municipality, the Presidente Benito Juárez Dam is located, which functions as the main economic support for its inhabitants thanks to the breeding of mojarras predominant in this area. This dish can be enjoyed in its different presentations during the Mojarra Fair that takes place every year in this municipality.
