The main language of this place was Mixtec, and its name in this language is Ñuutendi.
Nevertheless the conquest, and the later Spanish colonization, many new enclaves received toponyms based on the Spanish and to others they were added to the prehispanic name some antropónimo Spanish. The Spaniards were widely used of Nahuatl speakers for their purposes, so the Nahuatl would become the lingua franca of the region, being used in newly created toponyms or to rename the already existing peoples, who had the name in another Mesoamerican language other than Nahuatl. Huazolotitlan is an example of place-name of Nahuatl origin, in a place where before the conquest Nahuatl was not spoken or was not the main language.
