The Municipality of Bahía de Banderas is one of the 20 municipalities in which the state of Nayarit, Mexico is subdivided. Its head is Valle de Banderas. It is located in the South Coast Region of the state. Together with the municipality of Puerto Vallarta in the State of Jalisco, it forms the Metropolitan Zone of Puerto Vallarta being the second most populated of both states. Likewise, the municipality is one of those with the highest population growth in the state, even greater than the central municipalities. It receives its name from the Bay of Banderas that bathes the south coast of the municipality and is divided politically between the states of Jalisco and Nayarit, and in which the Ameca River empties.

It is the most important economic zone in the state of Nayarit. Currently, it is one of the most visited places in the country. It is an important tourist point both nationally and internationally since it annually receives millions of national and foreign tourists, mainly from the United States, Canada and Europe.
