The municipality of San Francisco del Rincón, world capital of the hat and national capital of sports footwear, is located in the western or western part of the state of Guanajuato. With its 425.98 km2 it represents 1.39% of the total area of the state. It borders to the north with Purísima del Rincón and to the east with León, Guanajuato and Romita. To the south, with Romita and Manuel Doblado, and to the west with Purísima del Rincón. It is located 1,750 meters above sea level. The most important elevations are Cerro La Reserva and Mesa de California. The main water currents are Santiago, León, Guanajuato, La Loma, Las Conchas and La Barranca.
Among the most important bodies of water are Silva, and Bordo Blanco. The predominant climate in the municipality is semi-warm subhumid, with rains in summer. More than 90 percent of its inhabitants practice the Catholic religion. The educational offer is practically covered at 100 percent with 213 schools, from initial to professional. The municipality is widely communicated through roads, railways and modern satellite link systems. The municipality became famous for being the headquarters of Rancho San Cristóbal, Vicente Fox Quesada's country residence, president of Mexico during the period 2000-2006. During his tenure, he was visited by many personalities, including President George W. Bush of the United States.
The municipality, together with Purísima del Rincón, León de los Aldama and Silao, forms the Metropolitan Area of León ZML, with a population of 1,791,869 inhabitants, and number 6 among the largest metropolitan areas of Mexico in population terms. It should be noted that in the sports field the city has the San Francisco soccer team, which plays in the Mexican Third Division but has been in the Mexican 'A' first division, currently known as Liga de Ascenso.
