Pénjamo, is the head town of the homonymous municipality, one of the 46 municipalities of the Mexican state of Guanajuato. It is one of the cities with the largest commercial movement in the State, and is considered the largest city in the Southwest of the state and number 18 in population at the state level, according to CENSUS of 2010 with a population in the city of 40,070 inhabitants. Much of the city is located at the foot of the Sierra de Pénjamo. The city is part of Route 2010, which encompasses important scenarios of national independence and Mexican revolution.
Also, the city and parts of the municipality are part of the State Independence Route that covers the main points of interest, historical and tourist, related to Mexican independence in the state of Guanajuato, which includes 9 municipalities in total. It is located in the southwest of the state, and has a total of 164 261.27 hectares, corresponding to 5.20% of the state total. It limits with the municipalities of Abasolo, Cuerámaro, Manuel Doblado of Guanajuato, besides the States of Jalisco and Michoacán. According to the data the 2010 census the total municipal population amounts to 150,017 inhabitants in total in the municipality, calculating a population of 40,070 inhabitants in the City of Pénjamo, of which the majority is dedicated to services, commerce, in measure to industry and tourism. The motto of the city is "Cuna de Hidalgo", because in the year of 1753 the Father of the Mexican Homeland, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, was born in the city of Pénjamo.
It was approved in 2010 by the Congress of the Union of the United Mexican States, the Metropolitan Area of Pénjamo-La Piedad, which is located in the Mexican states of Guanajuato and Michoacán. The zone registers a population, according to the 2010 count of the INEGI of 249,854 inhabitants. The Santa Ana Pacueco Delegation, belonging to the City of Pénjamo, is linked to La Piedad, Michoacán and they are only divided by the Lerma River although they are linked by 7 bridges. So both cities share common needs and problems, and what caused the search of this metropolitan area.
