Zumpango is one of the 125 municipalities of the State of Mexico and one of the 7 and largest municipalities that make up the Zumpango Region, the headquarters of this region of Mexico is located in the municipal capital of the homonymous municipality. It limits the north with Hueypoxtla, the northwest with Tequixquiac, the west with Huehuetoca, the southwest with Teoloyucan, the south with Melchor Ocampo, the southeast with Jaltenco and the municipality of Nextlalpan, the east with Tecámac and the northeast with the municipality of Tizayuca, in the State of Hidalgo. This municipality was founded on July 31,1820 under decree of the Constitution of Cadiz, during the independence movement of New Spain.
The lands of the Lomas de España, the Llanos de Santa Lucía, rancherías that were owned by Spaniards in San Sebastián Buenavista, and the major corregimetos of San Juan Zitlaltepec and San Bartolo Cuautlalpan were integrated into the municipality.
