Ixtapaluca is one of the 125 municipalities of the State of Mexico, located in the center-south part of the basin of Mexico. Physiographically, it is located on the neovolcanic axis, in the eastern part of the state. It is located 7.5 kilometers from Mexico City, capital of the Mexican Republic, and 110 kilometers from Toluca de Lerdo, capital of the State of Mexico, and has an area of 318.27 square kilometers, which represents 1.46 percent of the state territory. In it are located the national highways of Mexico-Puebla and Mexico-Cuautla that branch precisely within its territory. Its territorial limits with other municipalities and states are: to the north, with the municipalities of Texcoco and Chicoloapan. To the northwest, with La Paz.
To the east, with Valle de Chalco Solidaridad. To the south, with Chalco. To the southeast, with the municipality of Tlalmanalco, and to the east, with the state of Puebla, it has a population of 495,563 inhabitants, according to the data of the INEGI intercensal survey of 2015. When comparing this figure with the of the 2010 INEGI Population and Housing Census, the increase is 28 thousand 202 inhabitants. By 2015, the population was distributed among 242 thousand 723 men and 252 thousand 840 women, which is equivalent to 48.97 and 51.03 percent, respectively. There is a ratio of 95 men for every 100 women who live in the municipality. The population density of the municipality is 1,557 inhabitants per square kilometer.
