Carlos Fermin Fitzcarrald
Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald López, was a Caucasian merchant and Peruvian explorer. In 1896, he discovered and traversed the isthmus that bears his name in the southern jungle of Peru. According to various historians, it was the most important geographical discovery of Peru during the nineteenth century, since 1988, by supreme decree, his native province, formerly called San Luis, in the department of Ancash, is named after him.
