Acacoyagua is one of the 122 official municipalities of the state of Chiapas, is located in the south of the state, and is located in the Sierra Madre. It borders the municipalities of Mapastepec in the North and West, Siltepec in the Northeast, Chiapas in the East and Acapetahua in the South. Its climate varies depending on the altitude, from warm to humid to humid, with an annual average temperature of 27°C. Acacoyagua has its origin in the Nahuatl that is reflected in its name meaning "Headquarters of the caudillo" or "place of great lords". There is no record of its foundation, but it is believed that its foundation dates back to before the Aztec invasion during the reign of Ahuizotl.
In a study conducted in 2010, it was documented by SEDESOL that 85.7% of the inhabitants were in poverty, of which 47.9% had moderate poverty, while the other 37.9% lived in conditions of extreme poverty.
