Staten Island or Staten Island is a coastal island of the Atlantic Ocean belonging to the state of New York. It is one of the five boroughs or metropolitan districts of New York City. Its territory is coextensive with that of Richmond County. Until 1975, the county and the district had the same name, year in which the City council decided to change the name of the borough to Staten Island, the original name with which it was known by the Dutch that colonized it. The name originated with the Dutch, who called 'Staaten Eylandt' in honor of the government of the Netherlands, the States General. Staten Island is separated, to the east, from Long Island by the strait called The Narrows.
And, to the north and west of the continent, by the rivers or channels Arthur Kill and Kill Van Kull. To the south it is bathed by the same Atlantic Ocean. It is connected to New Jersey by three bridges and to Brooklyn by the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. The Staten Island Ferry connects the island with southern Manhattan, through the Upper Bay of New York, and has become a popular tourist attraction with free entry, offering good views of the Statue of Liberty, the island Ellis and Lower Manhattan.
