Dukes County
Dukes County is one of the fourteen counties of the US state of Massachusetts. In 2000 the county had a population of 14 987 inhabitants. The county seat, Edgartown, was originally established as Dukes County, New York on November 1,1683, and was transferred to Massachusetts and divided so that Nantucket Island became Nantucket County, Massachusetts on 7 October of 1691. The statute was created "by the name of Dukes County" as opposed to as it is usually "Dukes County" reason for the redundancy of its name.
