Rockingham County is a county located in the state of Virginia, in the United States. According to the 2000 census, its population was 67,725 inhabitants. The county seat is Harrisonburg. Rockingham County is included for statistical purposes in the Harrisonburg, Virginia, metropolitan area, and is the seat of the Rockingham County Baseball League, founded in 1924. Rockingham County was created in 1778, as a division of Augusta County. Its name comes from the Marquis of Rockingham, a British statesman. It comprises seven municipalities endowed with self-government and some thirty that lack it. For its part, Harrisonburg, as an independent city, does not belong to the county, despite having the status of headquarters.
The seven self-governing municipalities are Bridgewater, Broadway, Dayton, Elkton, Grottoes, Mount Crawford and Timberville.
