City of Portsmouth
Portsmouth is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States of America. The city is located on the western bank of the Elizabeth River, just opposite the city of Norfolk. Portsmouth was founded by the General Assembly of Virginia by Colonel William Crawford, a wealthy merchant and ship owner, in 1752. In 1855, the area of Norfolk and Portsmouth suffered an epidemic of yellow fever, which killed 1 in 3 citizens. It became an independent city of Norfolk County in 1858.
