Chesterfield County is a county in the US state of Virginia. In the 2000 census the county had a population of 259,903 inhabitants. It is part of the Richmond metropolitan area. The county seat is Chesterfield. The county was formed on May 25,1749 from a portion of Henrico County. It was named in honor of Felipe Stanhope of Chesterfield, who was Secretary of State of the United Kingdom.
