Allegany County
Allegany County is a county located in the western part of the US state of Maryland. In 2000, its population was 74,930 inhabitants. The county seat is Cumberland. The name Allegany comes from the native word, oolikhanna, which means "beautiful river." Other states also have counties with names of the same origin, however their spelling varies: Allegany in Maryland and New York, Allegheny in Pennsylvania, Alleghany in Virginia and North Carolina.
