Cantón Cayambe
The canton Cayambe is one of the eight cantons of the Province of Pichincha. It is located northeast of it and has an area of 1182 km². It is made up of eight parishes, three urban and five rural. Cayambe is also the cantonal capital. Its cantonal head is the city of Cayambe, place where a large part of its total population is grouped. Also being the second most populated canton of the province, after Quito canton. Its name is derived from the ancestral village of the Cayambis that currently still inhabit the place.
Although its origin predates 1883, this date is taken as the moment of its foundation since it was the first time that the canton was part of the Province of Pichincha.
