Acosta is a canton located in the central area of the province of San José, in Costa Rica. It borders the cantons of Alajuelita, Escazú and Mora on the north, with the canton of Puriscal on the west, with the canton of Parrita on the south and with the canton of Aserrí on the east, and has a territorial extension of 342,24 km², its head is the district of San Ignacio, with a city category. The canton has 21 335 inhabitants, according to the latest demographic projection of INEC. The canton is characterized for being the most topographically broken of the country, where a frankly mountainous landscape predominates.
It is considered a predominantly agricultural canton, as agricultural activity continues to generate the highest income and gives the greatest amount of work to a high percentage of its inhabitants. The cultivation of coffee is the main agricultural activity and the main source of income. Acosta has a Human Development Index of 0.744, classified as high.
