Coto Brus is the canton number 8 of the province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Its head with city category is San Vito. Coto Brus is one of the cantons that make up the Brunca Region. To the north it borders the canton of Buenos Aires and the Talamanca to the east with the Republic of Panama. To the south and west with Golfito and Buenos Aires. Coto Brus is 1 hour from the Panamanian tourist area of Volcán-Bambito, province of Chiriquí and 2 hours from Golfito, point of entry to the Corcovado National Park and the Osa Peninsula. According to the 2011 National Census, the population of the canton was 38,453 inhabitants, of which, 4.9% was born abroad.
The same census highlights that there were 10,936 occupied homes, of which 46.5% were in good condition and there were problems of overcrowding in 5.1% of the houses.23.0% of its inhabitants lived in urban areas. Among other data, the literacy level of the canton is 94.7%, with an average schooling of 6.3 years. To access the canton, follow the South Inter-American Highway. At the point known as Paso Real there is a detour crossing the Río Grande de Térraba to route 237 that leads to San Vito.
