Escazú is a canton located in the western area of the province of San José, in Costa Rica, and belongs to the Greater Metropolitan Area, being one of the cantons that comprise it with the largest housing area. Bordered with the canton of Bethlehem in the northwest, with the canton of Santa Ana in the west, the cantons of Mora and Acosta in the south and with the canton of Alajuelita in the east, and has a territorial extension of 34.49 km² Its head, commonly known by the name of the canton, is the city of San Miguel. The canton has 67 362 inhabitants, according to the latest demographic projection of INEC.
The canton is characterized by having the second highest human development index in the country of 0.930. In addition, in 2013, according to the Ministry of Planning of Costa Rica, Escazú was the canton of greater social development in Costa Rica, due to its high rates of education, health, Internet access and citizen participation.
