Goicoechea is a canton located in the northeast of the province of San José, in Costa Rica, and belonging to the Greater Metropolitan Area. It borders the cantons of Vásquez de Coronado and Moravia to the north, with the canton of Tibás to the northwest, with the canton of San José to the southwest, with the canton of Montes de Oca to the south and the canton of Cartago by the southeast, and has a territorial extension of 31.50 km². Its head is Guadalupe, with city category. The canton has 133 557 inhabitants, according to the latest demographic projection of INEC.
The canton is characterized for being one of the most populated in the country, and also for its high degree of urbanism, commercial and industrial development and its great variety of relief. It has a human development index of 0,774.
