Guácimo is the sixth and most recent canton of the province of Limón, Costa Rica. It was created by law 4573 of May 8,1971, segregating it from the canton of Pococí. It is the only canton in the province without coasts in the Caribbean Sea. Its head is the city of Guácimo. In the district of Las Mercedes is the EARTH University, recognized internationally for the high quality of its academic program and research in the area of tropical agriculture. According to the 2011 National Census, the population of the canton was 41,266 inhabitants, of which 8.5% were born abroad.
The same census highlights that there were 11,797 occupied homes, of which 51.4% were in good condition and there were problems of overcrowding in 5.7% of the houses.48.7% of its inhabitants lived in urban areas. Among other data, the literacy level of the canton is 96.5%, with an average schooling of 6.3 years.
