Jiménez is the number 4 canton of the province of Cartago, Costa Rica. It is located east of the city of Cartago, in the limits of the Guarco Valley. Its head town is Juan Viñas. The canton is essentially mountainous and depopulated, dominated by the large Reventazón-Parismina River basin and its tributaries. Its surface is 286.43 km². According to the 2011 National Census, the population of the canton was 14,669 inhabitants, of which 2.4% were born abroad. The same census highlights that there were 4,113 occupied dwellings, of which, 56.7% were in good condition and there were problems of overcrowding in 2.0% of the dwellings.52.6% of its inhabitants lived in urban areas.
Among other data, the literacy level of the canton is 96.6%, with an average schooling of 6.6 years. The same census details that the economically active population is distributed as follows: Primary Sector: 32.7%. Secondary Sector: 16.4%. Tertiary Sector: 50.9% Like its neighbor Turrialba, it is characterized by its strong production of sugarcane.
