Montes de Oca is a canton located in the eastern area of the province of San José, in Costa Rica, and belonging to the Greater Metropolitan Area. Bordered with the canton of Goicoechea in the north, with the canton of San José in the west, the cantons of Curridabat and La Union in the south and with the canton of Cartago in the east by a small fragment, and has a territorial extension of 15.16 km², its head is the district of San Pedro, with a city category. The canton has 61,661 inhabitants, according to the latest demographic projection of INEC.
The canton is characterized by its commercial development, study centers, and its nightlife in areas such as the renowned Calle de la Amargura, and is known for its activities in the services sector. It is one of the most urbanized and active cantons, both during the day and at night, although it also contains suburban mountainous areas to the east of the canton. It has a human development index of 0.802.
