Pérez Zeledón is a canton located in the southeast area of the province of San José, in Costa Rica. It borders with the canton of Paraíso on the north, with the canton of Dota on the northwest, with the canton of Quepos on the west, with the canton of Osa on the south, with the cantons of Buenos Aires and Talamanca on the east and with the canton of Turrialba by the northeast, and has a territorial extension of 1 905.51 km², its head is the district of San Isidro de El General, with a city category. The canton has 142 291 inhabitants, according to the latest demographic projection of INEC.
The canton is characterized for being one of the most populated and extensive of the country, being its main economic activities agriculture, livestock, ecological tourism, and among others. Chirripó Hill is located, the highest point of Costa Rica with 3,820 m. S. N. M., where the cantons of Talamanca, Turrialba and Pérez Zeledón converge. The Cerro de la Muerte is also located in the canton. Pérez Zeledón has a Human Development Index of 0,767, classified as high.
