Monmouthshire is a unitary authority of Wales, in the United Kingdom. It was also one of its thirteen historic counties, occupying the homonymous historical region. It is located in the sociohistorical region of South Wales. It borders the west with the counties of Newport, Torfaen and Powys, to the north and east with Herefordshire and Gloucestershire in England, and to the south it is bathed by the Bristol Channel, in the Severn River estuary. In its northern area lies the town of Abergavenny. Its territory is crossed by the wall of Offa.
