Telford and Wrekin is a unitary authority located in the east of the county of Shropshire, in England. It has borders with Shropshire to the west, north and south, and a border with the county of Staffordshire to the east. Telford & Wrekin was created on April 1,1998. Telford & Wrekin is the only unitary authority in Shropshire. It bears the names of its capital, the new town of Telford, and its hill the highest, the Wrekin. In the 2001 census, Telford & Wrekin had a population of 158,325: 150,014 whites, 4,586 Asians, 1,728 mestizos, 928 blacks, 542 Chinese and 527 people of another race. Telford was created after a union between four villas: Wellington, Madeley, Dawley and Oakengates.
The only other village in the unitary authority is Newport, north of Telford.
