Portsmouth is a city and unitary authority in the southeast of England, in the United Kingdom, it belongs to the ceremonial county of Hampshire. Portsmouth, popularly known as Pompey, extends over the island of Portsea, opposite the Isle of Wight in the English Channel, which in turn forms the natural harbor of Portsmouth Harbor, a favorable geographic formation for refuge and maritime activities that have forged in part the historical and economic character of the city. Its population, according to estimates of 2014, rises to 209,085 inhabitants in its municipal area, and to about 443,000 in the metropolitan area comprising the terms of Fareham, Portchester, Gosport, Havant, Lee-on-the-Solent, Stubbington and Waterlooville.
It should be noted that it is the birthplace of the famous novelist Charles Dickens.
