Kent is one of the forty-seven counties of England, United Kingdom, with administrative capital in Maidstone, although the cultural and historical capital is Canterbury. Located in the southeastern tip of the country, in the Southeast region, it borders on the north with Essex, on the north and west with the North Sea, on the south with the Channel of the Channel and East Sussex, and on the west with Surrey and the Great London. It also has a "nominal" border with France in the middle of the Eurotunnel, the county occupies an area of 3736 km². The two towns with "city" status in the county are Canterbury, seat of the archbishopric of Canterbury, and Rochester, seat of the bishopric of Rochester.
However, in 1998 Rochester lost its official status as a city. The landscape is rugged and for its beauty Kent is also known as the garden of England. Agriculture in Kent is almost an industry in itself. In the eastern part of the county, several coal mines were exploited during the 20th century. Several ferries, the Eurotunnel and two British motorways connect the county with the European continent. There are also two airports, one in Manston and the other in Rochester, as well as several airfields. Brands Hatch is a race track venue for several international motorsport championships. Among the famous residents of Kent County is the writer Charles Dickens and the biologist Charles Darwin. Sir Winston Churchill also had a house in Kent.
