Greater London is a high-level administrative subdivision covering the city of London, England, one of the nine regions of England and has the rank of a ceremonial county. The administrative area of Greater London is composed of 32 London boroughs, including Westminster, but excluding the City, generically known as London, the capital of the United Kingdom. It covers an area of 1579 km² and has an approximate population of 8,100,000 people. Since 1965, it has been divided into two zones, inland London, composed of twelve municipalities, and outside London, composed of twenty municipalities. Since 2000, the region is administered by the Greater London Authority and has a mayor of London, controlled by the London Assembly. The status of Greater London is somewhat unusual.
It is officially classified as a ceremonial county, but at the same time it is one of the nine official regions of England. It is the only region in England with a broad power, an elected regional assembly and a high-level elected also by direct election. It should not be confused with the metropolitan area of London, defined in terms of geographic models.
