Gwynedd is a unitary authority located northwest of Wales in the United Kingdom, which takes its name from the ancient kingdom of Gwynedd. Although it is one of the largest areas geographically, its population is also among the scarcest. A large proportion of the population is Welsh-speaking. Gwynedd has become the center of Welsh nationalism, the Plaid Cymru being the dominant group in the area. Gwynedd is the seat of the University of Bangor, a member of the University of Wales, and includes the impressive Lleyn Peninsula and the Snowdonia National Park. The name "Gwynedd" is also used as the name of a preserved county, which encompasses Anglesey, as well as the main area.
