Northumberland is one of the forty seven counties of England, United Kingdom, with capital in Morpeth. Located in the Northeast region, it borders Scotland to the north, the North Sea to the east, Tyne and Wear to the south and Durham to the west, and according to the 2015 census, it had 315 300 inhabitants. The county's longest boundary extends along the Humber River to the north, as does King Edwin's ancient kingdom of Northumbria. At present, however, the county covers a smaller area. Until 1974 it included the city of Newcastle, the traditional capital of the county, that now belongs to Tyne and Wear. The current capital of Northumberland is Morpeth.
For some issues, especially those related to wildlife and some sports organizations, the limits established in 1974 are not taken into account. The official county borders Tyne and Wear, Durham, Cumbria and the areas of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale in Scotland. Northumberland is known for its traditional music, especially the bagpipe.
