Somerset is a ceremonial county and, excluding the unitary authorities of North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset, a non-metropolitan county of historical origin located in the South West of England. Its capital or county town is Taunton, locality located in the south of the county. It borders Bristol and Gloucestershire to the north, Wiltshire to the east, Dorset to the southeast and Devon to the southwest. Great part of its northern limit is delimited by the coasts of the channel of Bristol and of the estuary of the river Severn.
Its northern border has traditionally been the river Avon, but it was moved south with the creation and expansion of the city of Bristol and, later, with the birth of the county of Avon and the unitary authorities who succeeded it after its abolition. It is a rural area with undulating terrain such as the areas of Mendip Hills, Quantock Hills and the Exmoor National Park, as well as extensive plains such as the Somerset Levels. With its 4171 km2, it ranks number seven in area among the forty-eight ceremonial counties of England, while the non-metropolitan county of 3451 km2 is number twelve among the thirty-four non-metropolitan counties in England.
