Badajoz is a Spanish province, belonging to the autonomous community of Extremadura, where it occupies its southern part. It is located to the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula on the border with Portugal, in the South Sub-plateau. Bordered on the east by the community of Castilla-La Mancha, through the provinces of Toledo and Ciudad Real. To the south it borders the provinces of Huelva and Seville and to the southeast with that of Córdoba, all of them in Andalusia. To the north appears the province of Cáceres, which, with that of Badajoz, is part of the autonomous community of Extremadura. To the west, is Portugal.
With an area of 21,766 km², Badajoz is the largest province in Spain: the other province of Extremadura, Cáceres, is the second largest area with 19,868 km². In the province of Badajoz, is Mérida, capital of the autonomous community. However, its most populated urban nucleus is Badajoz, a city from which the province takes its name and which holds the capital of it. The Diputación de Badajoz is here, the institution that governs the province, as well as being the seat of the Delegation of the Government in Extremadura. The Diputación de Badajoz will celebrate the Day of the Province of Badajoz on April 26.
