The Tolhuin department in the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands was created on October 27,2017 by law of the legislature of that province, whose head is the city of Tolhuin. Until that date it depended administratively on the Río Grande department. The new department is located in the central region of the Argentine part of the Big Island of Tierra del Fuego. It limits to the south with the department Ushuaia and towards the north with the department Rio Grande.2. TOLHUIN DEPARTMENT: North: Inter-departmental boundary with the Río Grande Department. West: International boundary with the Republic of Chile in the section defined by the international milestones "XIX","XX","XXI" and "XXII, defined as follows: Its beginning is determined at the intersection of the geodesic line between the milestones "XIX" and "XX" with the parallel of latitude south 54°11 '18.769 "and west longitude 68°36' 28.179". From there, with a southern direction passing through the "XX" landmark and continuing until its intersection with the northern limit of the "Tierra del Fuego National Park" and the line defined by the milestones "XXI" and "XXII".
Departmental with Ushuaia Department, which is defined by a polygonal line that is described as follows: Starting from the northern limit of "Tierra del Fuego National Park" at its intersection with the geodesic line defined by the international milestones "XXI" and "XXII", of position 54°25 '35.669 "of south latitude and 68°36' 26.840" of west longitude, from there and following in the east direction along the boundary line of the Park until intersecting the parallel of latitude south 54°37 '11.318 "in the 68°22' 11.163" west longitude, from there, to one of the vertices that define the Tolhuin Urban Ejido on the southwest side, from position 54°37 '11.318 "south latitude and 67°23 '32,824."And in coincidence with this municipal limit and surrounding to the same: to the south, a vertex with latitude south 54°44 '39.124 "and longitude west 67°23' 15.971". To the east, a vertex with latitude south 54°44 '52,686 "and longitude west 67°00' 22,558". And to the north a vertex with latitude south 54°35 '54.330 "and longitude 67°00' 9.283". The final section of the line is determined by this last position as its beginning, following the direction defined by the parallel 54°35 '54.330 "of south latitude and ending at the intersection with the coastline established for the Atlantic Ocean. RÍO GRANDE DEPARTMENT: North: Strait of Magellan South: Defined by the parallel of latitude south 54°11 '18.769 ", which extends geographically from the Argentinian-Chilean international boundary from its intersection with the geodesic line defined by the international milestones "XIX" and "XX", which starts at Latitude south 54°11 '18.769 "and west longitude 68°36' 28.329" and continues through said geodesic direction until its intersection with the maritime coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. The geography of this department belongs to an ecotone of transition between the Patagonian Andean forest and the steppe. Its only city is Tolhuin on the shores of Lake Fagnano. There are other sparsely populated settlements such as the one located north of Lake Yehuin and Sarmiento.
