Sumqayit
Sumgait is one of the eleven autonomous cities of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Sumgayit is one of the largest cities in Azerbaijan, located near the Caspian Sea, approximately 31 kilometers from the capital, Baku. The city has a population of 308700, being the third largest city of Azerbaijan after the capital Baku and Ganja. The city has a territory of 83 square kilometers. It was founded on November 22,1949, as administrative union of two towns: Jorat and Haji Zeynalabdin, the second takes the name of oil entrepreneur and philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev. It is home to the Sumqayit State University.
