Armavir is one of the ten provinces of Armenia. It is in the southwest of the country, next to the border with Turkey. The capital is Armavir. It occupies a surface of 1.242 km², and in the year 2013 its population was of 267.100 inhabitants. The largest city is Vagharshapat, also known as Echmiadzin, considered the country's spiritual capital, since it is home to the oldest cathedral in the world, the Cathedral of Ejmiatsin, from the 4th century, and is the seat of the Catholicos, the highest authority, of Patriarch, of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It is located west of Yerevan, which is considered a satellite city, in the valley of the Kasagh River, near the Zvartnots International Airport.
To the west is Metsamor, the third city in the province, after Armavir. It was built in 1979 to house the personnel of the nuclear power plant.
