Otago pronunciation is a region of New Zealand located in the southeastern part of the South Island. It has an area of approximately 32,000 km², which makes it the second largest region of the country. In the 2001 census, the population was estimated at 181,542 inhabitants. The name "Otago" comes from the English version of the word from the Maori dialect Kai Tahu,"Otakou". The village of Otakou on the Otago Peninsula was a whaling base during the early years of the settlement of Europeans on the east coast of Murihiku around 1840. The largest towns include Dunedin, Oamaru, Balclutha, Alexandra, and the resorts of Queenstown and Wanaka. Kaitangata in South Otago has an important coal mine.
The Waitaki and Clutha rivers also generate a significant amount of hydroelectric power. The first university of New Zealand, the University of Otago was founded in 1869 as the provincial university of Dunedin. The Central Otago area produces wines of excellent quality, made with varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Riesling.
