Baku is the capital and most populous city of Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus. It is located on the southern coast of the Absheron Peninsula, which is projected on the Caspian. The city is composed of two main parts: the center and the inner old city. In January 2018 Baku had a population of 2,262,600 inhabitants, of which 153,400 were internally displaced and 143,400 refugees from the Nagorno-Karabakh war. Baku is divided into eleven administrative districts and 48 municipalities. Among these are the municipalities of the islands of Baku Bay and Neft Daşları built on stilts in the Caspian Sea, 60 km from Baku.
The urban center of the city, with the Palace of the Shirvanshah and the Maiden's Tower, was inscribed by Unesco as a World Heritage Site in 2000. According to the Lonely Planet classification, Baku is also among the top ten urban nightlife destinations of the world. The city was one of the largest oil centers of the former Soviet Union and is currently the scientific, cultural and industrial center of Azerbaijan. Many important institutions in Azerbaijan are based there, including SOCAR, one of the top one hundred companies in the world, among others, the Baku International Maritime Port, protected by the islands of the Baku archipelago to the east and the Absheron peninsula. To the north, it is capable of transporting two million tons of bulk and dry bulk cargo per year.
The city hosted the 57th Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 and was the venue for the 2015 European Games, it is the venue of the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan Formula 1 since 2016 and was the headquarters of the BMX World Cycling Championship in 2018 and the EURO 2020.
