The State of Rhode Island and Plantations of Providence, or simply Rhode Island, is one of fifty states that, together with Washington D. C., form the United States of America. Its capital and most populated city is Providence. It is located in the Northeast region of the country, New England division, bounded on the north by Massachusetts, on the east and south by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by Connecticut. With 4002 km² it is the least extensive state in the country, with 263.01 inhabitants / km², the second most densely populated -behind New Jersey- and with 1 052 567 inhabitants. In 2010, the eighth least populated, ahead of Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming, the least populated.
He was admitted to the Union on May 29,1790, as the 13th state. It was the first of the original thirteen colonies to declare the independence of British rule, marking the beginning of the American Revolution. Later it was the last of the thirteen to ratify the Constitution of the United States. It is traditionally nicknamed Little Rhody or "Lil Rhody", although it has officially adopted the nickname of "The Oceanic State".
