Stepanakert is the largest city and capital of the Republic of Artsakh, a de facto independent republic that is recognized as a part of Armenia. The population of the city comprises around 50,000 people of Armenian origin. The control of the area has been disputed between Azerbaijan and Armenia since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The population of ethnic minorities of Azeris fled the city in the early stages of the War of Karabakh. Currently, Stepanakert, like the rest of Upper Karabakh, remains under Armenian military control.
