Baja California, officially called the Free and Sovereign State of Baja California, is one of the thirty-one states that, together with Mexico City, make up the United Mexican States. Its capital is Mexicali and its most populated city, Tijuana. It is located in the northwest corner of the northwest region of the country, bounded on the north by the US state of California, on the east by Sonora and the Sea of Cortés or the Gulf of California, on the south by Baja California Sur and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. It was founded on January 16,1952.
