Coahuila de Zaragoza, officially called the Free and Sovereign State of Coahuila de Zaragoza and commonly called Coahuila, is one of the thirty-one states that, together with Mexico City, make up the United Mexican States. Its capital and most populated city is Saltillo. It is located in the northeast region of the country, bounded on the north by the Rio Grande that separates it from the United States, on the east by Nuevo León, on the south by Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí, and on the west by Durango and Chihuahua.
With 151 563 km² it is the third most extensive state -behind Chihuahua and Sonora- and with 20.16 inhabitants / km², the seventh least densely populated, ahead of Zacatecas, Sonora, Campeche, Chihuahua, Durango and Baja California Sur, the least densely populated. It was founded on June 25,1824. It has a large number of ecosystems, ranging from the deserts in the Comarca Lagunera to the forests in the Sierra Madre Oriental. It is famous for being part of the Republic of the Rio Grande in the year 1840. It is divided into 38 municipalities. In addition to Saltillo, other important locations are: Torreón, Monclova, Piedras Negras, Acuña.
