Magdalena is a department of Colombia. Its capital is Santa Marta. It is located northeast of the country, in the Caribbean region, bounded on the north by the Caribbean Sea, northeast by La Guajira, east by Cesar, south and west by Bolívar and northwest by Atlantic. It was one of the original nine states that made up the United States of Colombia. The department takes its name from the river that bathes it on its western side. The Magdalena In the northern area of this department is the municipality of Aracataca, famous for being the place where the Nobel Prize for Literature Gabriel García Márquez was born in 1927.
In its capital, Santa Marta, Simón Bolívar died in 1830, and in 1961 the singer Carlos Vives was born.
