Zacapa is a department located in the North-East region of the Republic of Guatemala. It limits to the North with the departments of Alta Verapaz and Izabal. To the South with the departments of Chiquimula and Jalapa. To the East with the department of Izabal and the Republic of Honduras. And to the west with the department of El Progreso. Its departmental head is Zacapa. Due to its geographical configuration that is quite varied, its heights range between 130 meters above sea level in Gualán and 880 meters above sea level in the municipality of La Unión, its climate is warm. Zacapa is a department with a majority Ladino population, less than two percent are indigenous.
Zacapa - along with Chiquimula, Guatemala City, Jutiapa and Retalhuleu - is the department with a low proportion of indigenous people, Zacapa is also the department with the highest literacy rate in the entire country.
