Quintana Roo is one of the thirty-one states that, together with Mexico City, make up the United Mexican States. Its capital is Chetumal and its most populous city, Cancun. It is located in the Yucatan peninsula, southeast region of the country, bounded on the north by Yucatan and the Gulf of Mexico, on the east by the Caribbean Sea, on the south by Belize and on the west by Campeche, with 1,501,562 habs.

In 2015 it is the seventh least populated state - ahead of Aguascalientes, Tlaxcala, Nayarit, Campeche, Baja California Sur and Colima, the least populated - and with 31.29 inhabitants / km², the eighth least densely populated, ahead of Coahuila, Zacatecas, Sonora, Campeche, Chihuahua, Durango and Baja California Sur, the least densely populated. It is together with Baja California Sur the youngest state in the country, both promoted from Federal Territory to Free and Sovereign State, on October 8,1974. Its most populated locations are Cancun, Chetumal, Playa del Carmen, San Miguel de Cozumel.
